9/11 Tribute Center Classroom Toolkit
Collected Stories of Inspiration
September 11th: Personal Stories of Transformation is a complete toolkit for the classroom. Five-minute interactive videos engage students in stories of 10 people who channeled tragedy into healing and civic engagement.
There are eight five-minute video stories featuring people who were deeply affected by the attacks of 9/11 and responded with humanitarian initiatives to strengthen their local and global communities. The compelling stories include a local high school principal, a survivor, 9/11 family members, first responders, a Muslim community member, and brothers of victims who created memorials in Pennsylvania and Virginia.
I like the intimacy that one feels with each person. Even though each unit has so much complexity, it has many points of access for students with different life experiences and learning styles.” –High school principal from New York City
In addition to multimedia stories, each video features specific materials for classroom use, including:
- thought-provoking questions for classroom discussion
- a back-story biography on each person
- definitions for new terms
- a timeline of events
- a bibliography for further research
- suggestions for related community service projects
Please note: This is a Flash-based interactive program with PDFs for lesson plans.
The classroom materials are wonderful and easy to use. I am grateful that they move from the personal story to inspiring students to become civically engaged with service learning opportunities.” -High school teacher from Kansas
