Why move now?

After ten successful years, the 9/11 Tribute Center is moving to a new location to expand our programs and exhibits and meet the needs of the growing visitation to Lower Manhattan.

 

Will the mission of the Tribute Center change?

The 9/11 Tribute Center will continue our mission of supporting the 9/11 community and sharing their personal stories. The expanded Tribute Center will explore how those impacted by 9/11 have sought opportunities to channel their grief and trauma into constructive service and the greater role of service and outreach throughout the world. We will also offer our visitors the opportunity to commit to acts of service in the “Seeds of Service” gallery, a communal and social interactive space.

 

What will the new museum look like?

The galleries of the 9/11 Tribute Center will be expanded and will include a historical overview and timeline of the growth of Lower Manhattan, the events of 9/11, the immediate response and spontaneous acts of people helping people, a section on the recovery and rebuilding of New York City, a tribute to the victims, and opportunities to learn about the global outreach and service initiatives that came about after 9/11.

 

What will be different about the exhibitions?

In 2006 the 9/11 Tribute Center captured the history of the events of 9/11 from the perspective of family members, survivors, first responders, recovery workers and Lower Manhattan residents. The new exhibitions will expand to include focus on the long term emotional recovery and rebuilding and the humanitarian activism in response, as 9/11 foundations are continuing an inspirational legacy of the unity and service of America.

 

Will we still be able to interact with members of the 9/11 Community?

We are creating two dedicated storytelling areas where our volunteers will be able to tell their stories and answer visitors’ questions multiple times a day. When someone is not available in person, we will showcase recorded stories from our “We Were There,” “My 9/11 Story,” and Moth storytelling programs. And we will still be offering our acclaimed walking tours where visitor hear personal stories of two volunteer guides.

 

Will you still offer walking tours?

Yes! Walking tours are a cornerstone of the 9/11 Tribute Center. The tours will begin at the new location in a dedicated visitor orientation space and then walk up Greenwich Street to begin the tours.

 

When will you be moving?

We hope to open our new location to the public in the first quarter of 2017. We may be closing the current 9/11 Tribute Center for a few weeks in order to move objects and artifacts but our plan is to continue walking tours during the transition.

 

How can I get involved with the Tribute Center?
