Take the next steps to becoming a volunteer

“Volunteering at Tribute has been one of the best things I could have done since 9/11. It truly makes me feel connected to those who have experienced what I have. But I’ve also learned what others have been through.”

Meet Our Volunteers

Over 200 active volunteers share their stories with the public.
Here is just a small sample:

  • Gerry
    Gerry Survivor

As an employee of the New York Metro Transportation Council, Gerry’s office was on the 82nd floor of the North Tower. Having survived both the 1993 attack and the September 11th attacks, his evacuation stories are compelling and reflective.

  • Cynthia
    Cynthia 9/11 Family Member

Cynthia’s husband worked on the eighty-fourth floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower. He left behind two daughters. This tour gives perspective on the tragedy of 9/11 as well as the humanity and hope for the future experienced by 9/11 family members.

  • Rita
    Rita Civilian Volunteer

Working at the Medical Examiner’s Salvation Army canteen during the recovery effort, Rita shares her moving experiences. This tour portrays the generosity and humanity of the hundreds of volunteers that came to help after the attacks.

  • Gail
    Gail Resident of Lower Manhattan

Gail lives across the street from the World Trade Center. Gail was not able to return to her home for over fifteen months after the attacks. On the morning of September 11th, she was nearby when the first plane hit the North Tower. She made her way home, only to flee after the collapse of the South Tower.

  • Richie
    Richie Rescue and Recovery

Richie Fuerch is a retired firefighter who continued on duty on 9/11, as a Deputy Chief in Division 6 in the South Bronx. He responded to the WTC on the morning of September 12 and worked at the site on a rotating schedule over the next two months. Richie, who grew up in New York City, worked exclusively at the site during the month of February 2002. He organized and supervised workers and worked to ensure that people on the site were safe

  • Matt
    Matt 9/11 Family Member/Rebuilding

Matthew Crawford’s father, Robert Crawford, was a firefighter with the FDNY for 32 years when he responded with the FDNY Safety Battalion on 9/11. Matthew went to Ground Zero soon after the attacks to search for his father. They later discovered that he had died in the South Tower. Today, Matthew is working on the construction of the transportation hub at the World Trade Center, leading the construction of the White Marble Installation
