Meet Yogi – The FDNY Dalmation

On Tuesday, April 26 at 3 pm, children and families in Lower Manhattan will have a unique opportunity to meet a real firehouse Dalmatian dog. Yogi, a companion of the firefighters in Engine 74 on the Upper West Side, will be making an appearance at the 9/11 Tribute Center in a 45 minute public program about the role of dogs in the fire service.

New Exhibits At 9/11 Tribute Center

This week the 9/11 Tribute Center is opening two exhibits, one currently available online, and one at the Center. The online exhibition shares personal experiences of the first attack on the World Trade Center on February 26, 1993. The second exhibit at the Tribute Center explores health issues faced by people who lived through the second attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Join us for a presentation by Dr. Michael Crane, Director of the World Trade Center Health Program at Mount Sinai Hospital, on what is known and what is not known about 9/11 and illness. Dr. Crane is an assistant professor at the Icahn School of Medicine and his research has focused on the long-term health consequences of exposure to the World Trade Center disaster.

9/11 Congressional Hearing

A Congressional Hearing took place at the 9/11 Memorial Museum on September 8th . Lee Ielpi, co-founder of the 9/11 Tribute Center and Board Member of the 9/11 Memoiral Museum was one of the four speakers.

Police Commissioner William Bratton pointed out the numerous foiled terror plots as a result of excellent police work. Lee Ielpi stressed the need for our states to include a commitment to teach about 9/11, as many young people do not even know what happened here.

Mayor Giuliani talked about terrorism into the future and all pressed members of Congress to designate the 9/11 Memorial and Museum as a national museum.

On the morning of 9/11, New York journalists covered the biggest story of their lifetimes. Running into danger alongside first responders, their mission was to inform the public what was happening. Photographers and reporters walked underneath the Twin Towers completely unaware of the imminent threat to their own lives. They captured the images and sounds of history, but their exposure to such a traumatic environment resulted in profound choices they each made as they moved forward.

Architectural historian and author Anthony Robins shares stories of the history and architecture of the original World Trade Center complex. His book “The World Trade Center (Classics of American Architecture)”, originally published in 1987 while the Twin Towers still stood, offered the first serious consideration of the planning and design of the site.

The 9/11 Tribute Center, Chancellor Dr. Merryl Tisch of the NYS Board of Regents, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and Styuvesant High School opened the NYSE Exchange to bring attention to the responsibility of educators and parents to talk about 9/11 with students. The 9/11 Tribute Center released new 9/11 Teacher Resources today entitled Teaching 9/11.

Teaching 9/11, the second set of free online educational resources created by the 9/11 Tribute Center, is specifically targeted at teachers. The online video interviews with both educators and students, the accompanying lesson plans including Common Core alignments, and links to resources were developed in collaboration with schools in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
